This is a list of contacts, numbers and proceedures to follow in the event of an emergency.
Fire
Risk assessment, including fire escapes and plans are noted as part of the arrival / pre-set up activities at events (see dynamic risk assessment form). Then procedures set out by event organisers’ will be followed.
Evacuating Animals
If the animals need to be evacuated for any reason, please calmly place them back in their travel tanks and move them to the designated safe zone as quickly as possible.
Escaped Animals
Prevention
Do everything possible to prevent an animal escaping by:
- NEVER leaving the animals unattended
- ALWAYS double check tank lids are closed
- Make sure lifs fit correctly
- Use travel tanks designed for the intended species
If in the unlikely event that an animal does escape, follow the following protocol:
Immediate Action
- Where possible, close all windows and doors
- Check immediate vicinity of the enclosure and work outwards
Notification
- ALERT the event organisers
- CLEAR the area to prevent the animal getting accidentally injured
- REASSURE that none of the animals are dangerous
- EDUCATE that if anyone finds the animal to not touch it but instead alert the event organisers
If you’ve exhausted all searches and animal is still not found, please:
- Speak to your neighbours to inform them an animal is missing and to reassure that they are not dangerous.
(important for tarantula, scorpion, snake and lizards) - Alert local vets that the animal is missing
- Alert local animal warden that animal is missing
- Post on local social media pages that the animal is missing
- Search the local vicinity on foot
- Put up lost animal posters, reassuring public of animal’s safety if necessary
Discovery
Once the animal has been found:
- Check it over to ensure it is healthy and well – if not, contact vet
- Put it back in its enclosure with some food
- Place reptiles under their basking lights/hot end of their vivariums to warm up
- Let local vets, animal warden, neighbours, social media groups know the animal has been located (if relevant)
Incapacity of Owner
In the event that Lynn Hart and her immediate family are unable to look after the animals due to illness, injury or any other reason, please follow the holiday cover care plan example, then make contact with Jo Manser.
In the event of cessation of Animals in Mind through owner incapacitation, Mr Richard Dewing, of the same address will take care of the animals for rehoming. In the case of the death or incapacitation of Mr Richard Dewing, Jo Manser will make arrangements for animals to be rehomed at Merrist Wood College, Holly Lane, Worplesdon, Guildford, Surrey. GU33PE.
